Volunteer Near Arbutus: Patapsco Cleanups and Tree Planting
30 October 2026

If you have been looking for a way to give back close to home, Patapsco Heritage Greenway has a full November of volunteer days near Arbutus, including a trash cleanup at Lansdowne Middle School on November 8 and a tree planting on Catonsville's Short Line Trail on November 15. The cleanup and tree planting are free, and every volunteer just needs to sign up ahead of time.
Who is Patapsco Heritage Greenway?
Patapsco Heritage Greenway is the nonprofit that manages the Patapsco Valley Heritage Area, the river valley that wraps around Relay, Elkridge, Catonsville and Oella. The group works to preserve and restore the valley's environment, history and culture, and a lot of that work is done by neighbors who show up on a weekend morning with gloves on.

What happens at the Lansdowne Middle School cleanup?
This is the one closest to home for a lot of us. On Sunday, November 8, volunteers will pick up litter around the Lansdowne Middle School campus and along Lansdowne Road, which drains to the Patapsco River. All supplies are provided, and registrants get an email with details before the event. Sign up for the Lansdowne cleanup here.
What happens at the Short Line Trail tree planting?
On Sunday, November 15, Patapsco Heritage Greenway teams up with Catonsville Rails to Trails to plant trees along the Short Line Trail behind the Western School of Technology and Environmental Science. Volunteers dig holes, spread mulch, weed and put tree protection in place. It is a great way to leave something that will shade the trail for years. Sign up for the tree planting here.
The Oella Cemetery days are run with the Friends of Oella Cemetery, and the Bugs to Brine walk teaches you how to test streams for road salt with a Salt Watch kit from the Izaak Walton League.
What should volunteers bring?
- Register each person: every volunteer must sign up under their own name, or they can't join in on the day.
- Kids are welcome: volunteers under 18 need a parent or guardian with them.
- Leave pets at home: unless an event says it is pet friendly.
- Dress for the outdoors: long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe shoes.
- Bring water: the Oella Cemetery events have no water or restrooms on site.
What does this mean for people moving to Arbutus?
One of my favorite things about living in Arbutus all those years was how neighbors look out for each other, and that includes the places we share. The Patapsco Valley is right in our backyard. If you are new here, a volunteer morning is an easy way to meet people and learn the trails. Read my guide to seeing the Thomas Viaduct in Relay for another way to enjoy the valley, explore the neighborhoods around Arbutus, or see how to help Catonsville Emergency Assistance this season.
