UMBC's Department of Music has a full November lineup at its Catonsville campus, just minutes from Arbutus, and many of the concerts are free. Here is what is coming up, from jazz and choir to a faculty piano recital, plus how much each one costs.

What concerts are at UMBC this November?

All of these are listed on the UMBC Department of Music events calendar. Most take place in the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building.

Seven of the events above are free. My picks for a no-cost night out are the UMBC Chamber Players on November 18, the Wind Ensemble on November 20 (grab a free ticket ahead of time) and the double feature on Sunday, November 22, with Jazz in Concert in the afternoon and the Camerata choir that evening.

What are the ticketed shows?

Three faculty and guest shows are ticketed at 15 dollars general admission, 10 dollars for seniors and 5 dollars for students:

  • UMBC Faculty String Sextet, November 8: two Romantic favorites, Brahms' String Sextet No. 2 and Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence."
  • Grigorios Zamparas, piano, November 11: Liszt's "Dante Sonata," Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata and selections from Ravel's "Miroirs."
  • Walt Weiskopf Quartet, November 15: saxophonist Walt Weiskopf with music by Cole Porter and his own original jazz.

Ticket links are on each event's page on the UMBC calendar.

What is coming in December?

Mark your calendar for "An Ode to Joy for UMBC," the campus premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, on Saturday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 6, at 3 p.m. The UMBC calendar says tickets will be available this fall. If you enjoy the arts on campus, don't miss the free art exhibits at UMBC this fall either.
