Anduril Industries plans to invest 3.7 billion dollars in a new shipyard called Arsenal-2 at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point, and the state and county expect it to create more than 3,100 new permanent jobs. It is on the other side of Baltimore County from Arbutus, but a project this big touches the whole region, from job seekers to people thinking about moving here.

What exactly was announced?

On October 6, 2026, the State of Maryland and Baltimore County announced that Anduril Industries will build a two million square foot "software-defined shipyard" to expand America's submarine industrial base. You can read the full Baltimore County announcement of the Anduril shipyard for every detail.

Here are the key numbers from that announcement:

ItemDetail
CompanyAnduril Industries
Project nameArsenal-2
LocationTradepoint Atlantic, Sparrows Point complex, Baltimore County
Private investment3.7 billion dollars
SizeTwo million square feet
New permanent jobsMore than 3,100
Total jobs supportedOver 14,000 (directly or indirectly)
Annual economic outputOver 2 billion dollars

The county and state call it the largest single private investment in Maryland and the largest job creator in the state in over a decade.

Why is Sparrows Point such a big deal?

Sparrows Point has a long history of steel and shipbuilding. County Executive Kathy Klausmeier said, "This project will bring thousands of good jobs, new opportunities for local businesses, and billions in long-term economic value, strengthening our county for decades to come."

The shipyard will help the Navy meet its Virginia-class submarine needs, according to Anduril cofounder and CEO Brian Schimpf.

Is the deal final?

Not every piece yet. The State of Maryland and Baltimore County have committed to match up to 13 percent of Anduril's total anticipated private investment through incentive programs and new appropriations. The new appropriations still need approval from the Maryland General Assembly and the Baltimore County Council.

The state package also includes support for a Center of Excellence for workforce training at a site still to be chosen at or near Tradepoint Atlantic.

When will the jobs open up?

The announcement did not include a hiring timeline. If you are interested, the best move is to keep an eye on Anduril's own website and on county economic development news. I will share updates here as they come out.

What does this mean for Arbutus homeowners and buyers?

Arbutus sits near where I-95 and I-695 meet, so a lot of people who live here commute to jobs all over the region. A large new employer in Baltimore County means more people may be looking for homes within driving distance, and southwest Baltimore County is a natural place to look. If you are curious how commuting from Arbutus works, my Arbutus work and commute guide is a good start.

It is also a nice counterpoint to the recent news about the Guinness brewery closing in Halethorpe. Jobs come and go, and it helps to watch the big picture. If you are thinking about moving to Arbutus, I am always happy to talk it through.
