Arbutus Senior Center: A Guide for Neighbors 60 and Up

26 October 2026

Illustrated vintage poster of a bright community center surrounded by pottery, watercolor easels, pickleball paddles, bingo cards, a guitar and books, with the words Arbutus Senior Center, Free for ages 60+

One of the things that makes Arbutus feel like home is how well the community takes care of its seniors. The Arbutus Senior Center, at 855A Sulphur Spring Road right next to the Arbutus Library, is free to join for anyone 60 and older, and it is packed with classes, fitness, games and friendly faces. If you or a parent are new to the area, this is a wonderful place to start.

Who can join the Arbutus Senior Center?

Membership is open to anyone 60 and older, and there are no fees to join. Run by Baltimore County's Department of Aging, the center welcomes seniors from Arbutus, Catonsville, Halethorpe, Relay and beyond. Non-county residents can take part too when space is available.

What is there to do?

According to Baltimore County, there is something for just about everyone:

  • Art and crafts: stained glass, watercolor, ceramics and pottery (there is a kiln), and card making
  • Fitness: Drums Alive!, Tai Chi, aerobics, water aerobics, GeriFit, chair yoga, line dance and Zumba, plus a fitness center
  • Games and clubs: bingo every Tuesday, mahjong, canasta, dominoes, guitar, a book club, a needlecrafts club and a stamp club
  • Active play: ping pong, basketball and pickleball
  • Social events: concerts, dances, trivia, seasonal parties, lectures, workshops, movies and day trips

How do I find out what's coming up?

The center publishes a monthly newsletter called "The Link," with programs, activities and upcoming events. You can find the latest edition and the events calendar on the center's page on the Baltimore County website.

Do members have a say in what's offered?

Yes, and I love this part. Every member is part of the Arbutus Senior Center Member Council, which helps shape programs and priorities, and members help spread the word about community events, according to the National Council on Aging.

What does this mean for families moving to Arbutus?

If you are moving here with a parent, or thinking about downsizing nearby, having a free, active senior center in the middle of town is a big plus. The shared campus with the library and recreation center on Sulphur Spring Road makes it easy to get to. Learn more on our Moving to Arbutus page.
