New Lansdowne High School: What Families Should Know

The new Lansdowne High School building at 2405 Lansdowne Road celebrated its opening on September 30, 2026. It replaces a building that was about 60 years old, cost about $166 million to build and has room for 1,759 students. A new track and field are still being built on the old school's site.

When I lived in Arbutus, the Lansdowne High building came up again and again in conversations with neighbors, so it was a happy day to see the doors open. Here is a plain, simple look at what changed and what it means if you live nearby or are thinking about moving here.

What is new at Lansdowne High School?

According to WMAR-2 News coverage of the opening, the new school is more than 100,000 square feet larger than the old one and has room for more than 300 additional students. It includes a two-story physical education and fine arts wing and a commons area.

How long did the community wait for a new building?

A long time. WMAR reports that the push formally began in 2016, when a teacher brought the building's condition to the school board, and the groundbreaking came in October 2022. Principal Allison Seymour described how one voice grew over the years: "Soon that voice was joined by others."

Jane Lichter, chair of the Baltimore County Board of Education, said at the ceremony, "Facilities do make an incredible difference in education."

What is still being built?

The new track and field are going up where the old school stood. WMAR reports they are expected to be ready for next year's fall athletics season. If you drive Lansdowne Road, expect some construction activity on the site for a while.

The Lansdowne High School website has new building information for families, including arrival and dismissal routines, a site plan and floor plans for each level.

How do I find out which schools serve a home?

School boundaries follow the address, not the town name on the mailbox, and they can change. Before you make an offer on a home, look up the address with the BCPS Find Your Zoned School tool and confirm with the school directly.

I never rate or rank schools, but I am always happy to help you find the official tools and the right people to ask. You can also see this month's American Education Week family visit guide if you would like to visit a school in person.

What does the new school mean for homeowners and buyers?

A brand new public building is a big investment in the Lansdowne, Arbutus and Baltimore Highlands area, and it is something buyers often notice when they tour nearby homes. If you are house hunting, check the zoned school for each address on your list, then take a drive past the new campus.
