What should I know about Greenway Farms?

Greenway Farms has two choose and cut farms in western Howard County. The Woodbine farm at 15105 Frederick Road is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Cooksville farm at 14098 Reps Road is open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Both are closed Thanksgiving Day and open Black Friday. Saws and twine are free, shaking and baling are free, and leashed dogs are welcome. The fields close at dusk, and the farm notes that hours depend on the weather.

What makes Feezers Farm different?

Feezers Farm at 3700 Wards Chapel Road in Marriottsville is a small, family owned farm that grows its trees organically, without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides. It grows Norway spruce, Colorado blue spruce and white pine, and it also sells pre cut Fraser fir from another farm.

You can borrow one of the farm's bow saws, since chainsaws are not allowed, and it will bale your tree in netting for free. Dogs are welcome too, and the farm asks owners to clean up after them.

Where can I find more tree farms in Baltimore County?

Baltimore County's tourism office has a full Christmas tree farm guide on Discover Baltimore County, with farms from Perry Hall to Upperco plus pre cut lots. The Maryland Department of Agriculture's Maryland's Best directory also has a Christmas tree category, so you can search for farms near your address.

Tips for bringing home a tree

  • Measure your ceiling height and the spot where the tree will stand before you go.
  • Bring gloves, an old blanket for your car and straps or rope to tie the tree down.
  • Ask the farm about payment, since some farms do not take credit cards.
  • Once it is home, keep your tree watered and away from fireplaces, heaters and vents.

Picking out a real tree is one of my favorite family traditions, and the first Christmas in a new home is extra special. Measuring that living room ceiling is a fun first job for new homeowners!
